(1957)Jet,a weekly magazine geared toward the African-American market, publishes an article entitled,"The 'Pelvis' Gives His Views on Vicious Anti-Nigro Slur." The article addresses a growing rumor that Elvis made the statement that African-Americans are only fit"to buy my records and shine my shoes."Jet reporter Louie Robinson interviews Elvis on the subject on the set of Jailhouse Rock.In the interview,Elvis tells Robinson he'ssaid no such thing,or anything even close to it.Robinson also interviews several African-Americans who personally know Elvis, including Dudley Brooks,a Hollywoodsession pianist.By all accounts,Robinson concludes that Elvis believes"that people are people, regardless of race, color or creed."
