Here's a story for ya Kelly. Never published anywhere.
Once-upon-a-time ( Love that ),Elvis would rent the
Memphian theatre and show movies.....late at night.
I was one of the lucky few who could go whenever I
wanted. As long as I could find a ride. One night,my
brother and I went to work with Dad,hoping to get a
ride to the movies. Dad called us aside and asked if we
would ride with a new couple he'd met ,and get them in.
He had already told them the rules, and they agreed to
behave. My brother and I agreed to get them in,and we did.
They were very well behaved, and things went great...until....
the movies ended, and folks ripped out of the theatre,to
race Elvis back to Graceland. My brother and I were stranded.
THEY LEFT US. We reackoned, that if we tried to walk back to
Graceland,Dad would be off work, and headed home, before
we got there,so, we decided to walk home instead. We lived
at 600 Poplar Ave. It was a lot closer than Greaceland. So....
off we went. David was about thirteen, and I was about eleven.
Two kids...walking the streets of Memphis at 4:00am. A few
blocks from the Memphian,a paddy wagon pulled up. The officers
asked the obvious question, what are y'all doing out this time
of the morning. We said they wouldn't believe us if we told 'em.
One officer said," Try me". We told them our story, and the cop
said," You're right....I don't believe ya". We suggested,that if
they'd give us a ride home, they could check it out with Mom.
The landlady was perplexed, when we showed up in the back
of a paddy wagon...but she went and got Mom. We told Mom
what had happened, and she told the officers that it was most
likely true...at least very possible. They took her word for it,
and left. Then she had to explain things to the landlady. I never
volunteered to ride with strangers again.
